Summer 2 Week 1 w/c 1.6.20

Summer 2 Week 1 English Overview

Poetry linked to Summer in the city

This week, we will be looking at poetry and linking it to the Art project ‘Summer in the city’. By the end of the week you will have written your own poem – good luck!

Read the poem leisure. Think about the poetic devices the poet has used. Why is the word Beauty a proper noun in this poem? Who could the poet be referring to? Once you have read the poem twice answer the 9 questions. As much as possible, you should be answering in full sentences.

This week we are recapping the use of synonyms and antonyms – this is linked to your spellings. Remember a synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase in the same language. For example; pretty is a synonym for beautiful. An antonym is a word opposite in meaning to another. For example; bad is an antonym of good. Work through slides and then complete the task.

Work your way through the slides, reminding yourself of the poetic devices that can be used – there are examples to help you. Using the ideas on the slides, or thinking of your own, you need to write a poem based on the theme ‘Summer in the city’. This should be creative – not just a piece of writing! Think about how you’re going to present your work.

Recap your spellings from last week. Can you spell them correctly? This week’s spellings look at synonyms and antonyms. Work through the PowerPoint and practice your spellings by completing the task. Can you get any of these words into your writing next week?!
