The Courtyard of a House in Delft by Pieter de Hooch
In September 2025, Firs Farm pupils embarked on the ‘The National Gallery’s – Take One Picture 2025’. This year’s picture, ‘The Courtyard of a House in Delft’ by Pieter de Hooch 1658 is considered typical of de Hooch's middle period, in which he painted detailed portrayals of Dutch domestic architecture and courtyards.
The painting evokes the modest virtues of home life: a house owner, her daughter and domestic helper pass their lives in surroundings as neatly kept as they are meticulously defined by the artist, extended through an archway and onto the street. Every architectural detail evokes a sense of stability, and integrity.
We are invited into a quiet space: the serene courtyard of a red-brick house in the 17th-century Dutch city of Delft. Mild spring breezes rustle the trees, birds chirp overhead and footsteps can almost be heard on the brick-covered floor, together with the soft chatter of a little girl speaking to a maid. Pieter de Hooch has carefully constructed the scene to make us feel as though we are there too.
Our pupils were shown an investigative learning approach and were encouraged to question and research around the painting. They have been captivated by the painting’s relatability and intrigued by the details and inscriptions, igniting their imagination to decide which area to focus on. The culmination of our collective effort is showcased here.
