  • Yes Chef Comes to Firs Farm!

On Friday, 12th June, all of the Year 6 students took part in a cooking event Yes Chef hosted by Cooking Champions.

    by Asya & Orion 6UH

Cooking Champions is a community kitchen that offer lessons and sessions with free use of equipment and energy. Sustainable, impactful food activities with more than a pinch of fun!

The session started in the afternoon. Before touching any food or equipment, we all took turns washing our hands. With Chef Claire on our screen and another chef helping us in the classroom, it was very easy to ask questions, understand the steps, and get everything right. Our lesson focused on how to make a healthy salad using simple ingredients. As a helpful tip for healthy cooking, the chefs explained that consuming too much salt is bad for your health. Because of this advice, we were careful not to use too much salt in our salads.

We added the ingredients one by one, though I cannot recall the exact order we followed. Some of the items we used included lettuce, onions, carrots, beans, and sweetcorn, among many others. Lastly, we prepared a cup of salad dressing using vinegar, lemon juice, and oil. Once the cooking was finished, we sat down in groups of four to five people to eat our salads. Each of us had our own personal box to pack our salad into.

It was an incredibly enjoyable afternoon that proved healthy food can taste amazing. We all thoroughly enjoyed eating our creations and learned practical habits that will keep us cooking healthily for years to come.
